Asian Heritage Month: Celebrating Indo-Canadians

This poster for Asian Heritage Month recognizes a significant incident in Canadian history, the Komagata Maru incident. The Komagata Maru incident involved the Japanese steamship Komagata Maru. On May 23, 1914, the Komagata Maru reached Vancouver’s harbour via Hong Kong and Japan carrying 376 prospective South Asian immigrants who hoped to settle in Canada. Unfortunately, most were denied entry and forced to return to Calcutta (present-day Kolkata). This was a significant event in Canadian history, exposing the racism existing in Canada at the time, influencing immigration policy.

Despite this event, Indo-Canadians have become influential in politics and creating policy in the present day. On this poster are several Indian politicians who are making a difference such as Raj Pannu, Ujjal Dosanjh, Nina Grewal, and Herb Dhaliwal.
